Review of Economic Studies Meeting in CEU

This year, for the first time, the Review of Economic Studies May Meetings come to Budapest.

Professors Kőszegi and Szeidl publish in the Quarterly Journal of Economics

CEU professors Botond Kőszegi and Ádám Szeidl published their study titled A Model of Focusing in Economic Choice in the Quarterly Journal of EconomicsThe paper asks what aspects of their often complex choices people pay attention to and put more weight on.

Professor Lychagin publishes in American Economic Journal: Applied Economics

CEU assistant professor Sergey Lychagin published a paper with Sanghamitra Das, Kala Krishna and Rohini Somanathan, entitled “Back on the Rails: Competition and Productivity in State-owned Industry,” in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics. The paper looks at the effect that private sector competition can have on public sector companies protected from competition in the past.

CEU PhD awardees selected

The Department has nominated Miklós Farkas for the Academic Achievement Award for First-Year Doctoral Students based on his first-year GPA and achievements.

Koren publishes in American Economic Review

CEU associate professor Miklós Koren published a paper with Silvana Tenreyro, entitled “Technological Diversification,” in the American Economic Review.

CEU Economics is #9 in Europe based on research excellence

CEU ranks 9th among European economics departments and business schools in the number of European Research Council grants held by faculty. The three ERC Starting Grant hosted in the Department establish CEU as a new cluster of research excellence. Below is a ranking of European economics departments, business schools and research institutes based on the number of ERC grants within the SH1 panel (“Individuals, institutions, and markets”) held by current permanent faculty.

Two new ERC Starting Grants go to economics faculty Koren and Kőszegi

Associate Professor Miklós Koren and Professor Botond Kőszegi of the CEU Department of Economics have been awarded the prestigious Starting Grant of the European Research Council (ERC). Professor Koren received €1.314 million for research on “Measuring Knowledge Flows from Developed Countries to Central and Eastern Europe.” Professor Koszegi received €1.275 million for research on “Behavioral Theory and Economic Applications.” Koren and Koszegi are the only recipients of the ERC Starting Grants from Hungary this year. Also, they are two of only four recipients in Central and Eastern Europe, together with one each in Poland and Slovakia.

Professors Kőszegi and Mantegna join department

We are happy to welcome Professor Botond Kőszegi and Professor Rosario Mantegna as new faculty in the Department of Economics. Kőszegi joins us from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a leading expert on behavioral economics, a field that aims to understand economic phenomena by improving the psychological accuracy of economic models. Mantegna, joining us from the University of Palermo, is a pioneer of econophysics, a field that studies the emergent behavior of economic systems using the tools of statistical physics. His appointment is joint with the Center for Network Science.

Professor Kondor publishes in American Economic Review

CEU Associate Professor Péter Kondor published a paper with Veronica Guerrieri, entitled “Fund Managers, Career Concerns, and Asset Price Volatility,” in the American Economic Review, one the world’s leading journals in economics. The paper introduces a theory of portfolio management where fund managers differ in their ability but this is not observable to investors.

PhD student wins award at conference

Scholars from Slovak, Czech and international institutions were invited to present their research in all areas of economics at the Bratislava Economic Meeting 2012, organized on 7-8 June, 2012 in Bratislava. The meeting is organized every second year and its main objective is to foster contacts and lasting academic cooperation among international economists. The organizers launched a Best Student Paper Award to reward high quality papers selected from among those presented at the conference.
