Admission dates for 2013/2014
January 24, 2013:
• General application deadline for all programs for candidates. Late applications can be accepted on a case-by-case basis until the end of February, provided that the applicant is able to submit official score reports where required.
March 1, 2013:
• Application deadline for candidates applying through the Hungarian national higher educational application system / www.felvi.hu /. Applicants still have to apply through www.ceu.hu . (For Hungarian accredited MA in Economics program)

Program-specific requirements
MA Program in Economics
(US and Hungarian accredited program)
• Applicants must possess a BA degree (or higher) or be enrolled in the last year of their university studies. Successful applicants come from a variety of vocational and educational backgrounds; a previous degree in Economics is not required. Students from backgrounds other than Economics will have to complete additional credits in Economics subjects if they wish to receive a Hungarian Master degree.
• Applicants to the Economics Department must pass an examination in Mathematics, as well. The Mathematics exam tests candidates on basic calculus, probability theory and linear algebra. Students, who have no testing centers nearby should submit a GRE instead of the mathematics examination scores.
• CEU administered TOEFL tests are in late March.
• Applicants to the MA program in Economics must also submit a 500-word essay introducing their research topic and explaining their academic/professional background. Applicants should indicate how further studies at CEU would help them achieve their future career goals.
The CEU MA program in Economics is also accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee.
MA Program in Economic Policy in Global Markets
(US and Hungarian accredited program)
• Applicants must possess a BA degree in Economics, or BA or MA in related fields.
• In addition to meeting the General CEU Admissions Requirements, applicants to the MA in Economic Policy program must submit a 500-word typewritten essay introducing their research interest and explaining their academic/professional background.
Applicants should indicate how further studies at CEU would help them achieve their future career goals.
MA Program in Law and Economics
(US accredited program)
• The program in Economic and Legal Studies is offered jointly by the Department of Legal Studies and the Department of Economics. For the admission for the students with Law background (BA in Law from at least four years law program) will follow the same admission procedure as do the candidates applying for International Business Law program (IBL LLM; http://legal.ceu.hu/ ). Students with an Economics background (BA in Economics) should write an essay explaining why they wish to study law and economics, and include it in the application package.
PhD Program in Economics
(US and Hungarian accredited program)
The Department of Economics has launched a new field in PhD studies in cooperation with the Center for Network Science (http://cns.ceu.hu/ )in Economics from 2012/13 onwards in Network Science.
• The Economics Department admits around 6-10 students each year in the PhD program.
• Successful applicants are expected to hold an MA in Economics or in related fields (i.e. Mathematics, Statistics, etc) or equivalent degrees with a GPA of 3.33 or higher.
• Candidates should submit GRE test scores together with their application.
• In addition, the candidate’s mathematics proficiency, familiarity with relevant economic theory and with research methodology will be examined through his transcript.
• Applicants should submit relevant graduate and undergraduate transcripts. If transcripts from previous universities are not complete, applicants are strongly advised to send updated transcripts once the degree is completed.
• 500-word research proposal/motivation letter (If you are interested in the Network Science Field, please indicate it in your proposal)
• A research interest in the region is preferred but not required.
Financial Aid
Applicants to all MA programs at the Department of Economics are eligible for tuition waiver and/or partial stipend packages except candidates for the Economic and Legal Studies Program. This program is full fee-paying.
Partial packages for incoming students include tuition waiver, dormitory, and a monthly stipend.
PhD students all receive a full tuition waiver and a competitive stipend.
